Cataract Surgery Q & A
What are cataracts?
You have a lens inside each of your eyes that focuses light on your retina. As you age, the proteins in those lenses start to deteriorate and become hazier, which clouds your lenses and interferes with the way light passes into your eyes. When the lenses are clouded, they’re called cataracts.
Cataracts usually develop slowly, and you might not notice any changes in your vision for years. Still, as cataracts progress, you will start to notice:
- Colors look dull or yellow
- Hazy or blurry vision
- Double vision
- Reduced night vision
- Needing more light to read
- Increased sensitivity to light and glare
- Halos around sources of light such as car headlights
The only treatment for cataracts is surgery to replace your clouded lenses. The doctors at Advanced Laser & Eye Center of Arizona can help you decide whether you are to the point that surgery is needed.
What causes cataracts?
Cataracts are usually age-related, although your risk of the condition is higher if you have a family history of cataracts, diabetes, or spend a lot of time in the sun without UV-blocking sunglasses. There are several other less common types of cataracts, including:
- Congenital cataracts
- Traumatic cataracts
- Cortical cataracts
- Posterior and anterior subcapsular cataracts
Having routine eye exams is the best way to monitor your eye health and the progression of cataracts to ensure you get appropriate treatment at all stages.
What is cataract surgery?
Advanced Laser & Eye Center of Arizona is a leading Cataract Surgery center in the state. They have their own state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center, Advanced Surgery Center of Arizona, that includes all the newest Cataract Surgery technology, including the Zepto® robotic Cataract Surgery system.
Cataract surgery is a quick, painless, outpatient procedure. Your doctor provides a sedative and numbing eye drops to keep you comfortable throughout the operation. Then, using innovative robotic surgery technology, they make a small incision in your eye to access your cataract and replace it with a new, clear lens.
Advanced Laser & Eye Center of Arizona offers a variety of intraocular lenses, including Toric lenses that correct astigmatism, and multifocal options from ReSTOR® and Tecnis Symfony®.
While insurance often covers cataract surgery, it usually does not cover the added benefits of upgrades such as Toric or Multifocal intraocular lenses.
